Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
