The UK and US have reached a key trade agreement that will keep no tariffs on UK medicine products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to boost expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This commitment secures that duties on these vital goods will remain at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This deal follows earlier warnings to hike tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with increases mentioned reaching 100%.

"This arrangement with the Britain strengthens the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings much-needed fairness to transatlantic drug exports," an announcement noted.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the Britain's most significant export categories to the US, which is by far the primary market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data indicate that in the 12 months prior to last September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products worth billions to the US. This figure represented a significant portion of total UK exports in that period.

"This agreement safeguards jobs, increases investment and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for biotech and pharma," a government official stated.

Key NHS Changes

The pact entails several key changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new treatments to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage drug companies must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. Previously, repayments were more than 20%.

Broader Context

The deal follows a protracted dispute between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

These tensions were intensified by assertions that US customers were paying several times more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major investments have been announced toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS must invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a share of its resources over the past decade.
