Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
